So I just found out about this shit last night, and it's been kind of rocking my shit since then.
There used to be this band called Gowns that played some seriously drugged-up droney noise folk rock shit and had one album called Red State

There are parts of it that sound very Stars of the Lid-influenced to me, but moves past that it into slightly more confrontational and song-y music
Erika Anderson's sprechstimme-style vocal delivery really makes the music for me, and totally sells the out-of-your-head nowheretown basement ennui vibe they build so well
here's the last song from Red State, Cherylee: if you stick with it until the end, you get to what i think is basically one of the shining moments of the album and where her singing really nails the shit out of it

Gowns broke up after this record, but now Erika is doing her solo thing under the name EMA

pitchfork just gave Best New Music to California, the first single from her forthcoming album Past Life Martyred Saints, which I am listening to now
and it's pretty awesome so far.
the first song from that record is Grey Ship:

so let's talk about this shit. I'm sure there are other people here who have heard of at least one of these two projects, but I'm just in the middle of discovering something I wish I had known about for a long time and it's really exciting

yeah it gets real like halfway through

on her blog she talks about how she likes the idea of recording fidelity as a signifier, so she wanted to make a song that drastically switched to the other halfway through

pretty f'n neat

Gowns sounds intriguing to me, her solo stuff does not. about to listen to that single.

the pitchfork review of Past Life Martyred Saints says something about how you don't always want to listen to it because it's so emotionally bleak and heavy
i find that to be much more true of Gowns than EMA; Red State is a very draining album, and I find myself listening to PLMS a lot more because of it
but it's still really good. i'm not as big a fan of the guy's voice on it though
