Any bands you'd be expected to like, based on your musical taste, but just don't "get"? Mine'd be Tool and Thrice.

I like this thread. Thrice can give me that vibe as well, even though I appreciate them.

Yeah, I was pretty late on the Portugal bandwagon, but I do love them now.

I do like Thrice, but they're more meh than they're described to be for me

Animal Collective. Although I haven't really given them an honest listen aside from a few songs.

Give them an honest listen. They aren't baby food, it takes time to digest.

If you can't feel the emotion dripping from Pneumonia and respect it just for that alone you have some issues.

If you were into Thrice at the time of Artist in The Ambulance you would have a different view on this.

I've been into Thrice since Illusion of Safety, they were one of my favorite bands. I didn't really care about Beggars based on how I felt about The Alchemy Index, but when I heard Beggars, man I got so back into them.

I'd say Portugal for me. I loved the first album and just got less interested with each release after that. I like the songs and all, but I really don't see why everyone gets such a huge boner.

Any other bands that come to mind would be ones that I was really into at one point, but just stopped liking the music they were putting out. Which just so happened to coincide with their rise in popularity, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. A good record is a good record.

That's what I'm saying. I think they could have taken 2 or 3 songs off each disc and made a pretty good album, but as a whole I don't listen to it much. But Beggars kicks ass and I'm glad one of my favorite bands is making awesome music again.

I'll third radiohead. I even borrowed a couple cds from a friend and just couldn't really get into it. Not gonna say they suck, I just wasn't "getting" it.

radiohead being posted too much in this thread. smh

there's a decent amount of electronic stuff that i feel like i should be into but can't really figure out. Squarepusher, Plaid, and Autechre immediately come to mind. i also don't really get down with a lot of the well-known 'indie' rappers like Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Murs, etc. Even though i love hip hop, i would rather listen to either straight up mainstream rap or instrumental hip hop, with few exceptions

Atmosphere is pretty dank, man. I would suggest giving them another chance.
For me, I'm there with Portugal, even though I've seen them once and really liked their sound. I can't seem to fully indulge myself in that music. Also, I can't get into the Arctic Monkeys too much either.

Have you listened to Illogic by any chance?

I'm not really a big fan of most hip-hop, but I really dig Illogic.

But for me, it's Thrice, Animal Collective, Maps & Atlases (mostly because of that guy's voice), At the Drive-In, Joy Division, and Forgive Durden.

radiohead and animal collective can be summed up in the same way. they are both bands you need to focus on while listening to and you need to listen to it fairly loud. every time i listen to these bands i like it more and more. every now and then i hear something completely new that i didnt hear before and ive been listening to both these bands a shit ton within the past year or so. its all about subtle musicianship. they have so many tiny things going on in the details but they never take away from the actual song.

also, alchemy index is the best thing thrice ever did. they have constantly taken their music somewhere else with each release and its obvious they just love playing music. plus a lot of the alchemy index is just raw tracks and they can fucking play. some songs are a not so good but within a 4 ep release there are bound to be some bad songs.

atmosphere and all those rappers i like to listen to when its on, but i never go out and buy that stuff. rhymesayers is a pretty big deal and they constantly help out the local music scene and you gotta give those dudes respect.

Only from the people who don't realize that musical taste is subjective, but it's usually pretty lulzy anyway.
