My friend who knows much more a great deal of recording than I do, owns that. Works beautifully from what I'm able to see...
Though, going into Guitar Center and into the Recording/Studio section makes him slightly envious... Heh

In my opinion the kick sticks out like a sore thumb throughout the entire song. It sound very honky and you only get the attack of the drum and none of the bass or "oomph". Also whenever that rhodes keyboard comes in its a bit too loud. Also I'm fairly certain that it comes from reason and is a stock patch so that if you can play with the sound and make it your own it would also make it sound a bit better. The vocals sound really good, but they are a little to loud for my taste and the harmonies get heavy on the right side at some points.

The piano break in the middle sounds good but I would bring the vocals down to match the dynamic a little better. I would also consider bringing the level of that entire part down and the level of the next part up so that when it breaks back into the full band its a little more powerful and uplifting. The "it ends here, it ends" part is really catchy.

The Bass has a lot of low end and you can tell its there but it doesn't have the presence it needs. The guitars sound pretty good and fit pretty well in the mix.

Pretty good song though. What is the band?

Good ears, dude

I have an updated full resolution mix here
http://www.yousendit...FdGo3N0FLSkE9PQ

I think the kick sounds alot better and the vocals have been tamed as well...keys are still being tweaked.

The rhodes is actually from NI's eletrik pianos plugin - we will work with it though, its easy to get lazy with those darn presets

The vocals definitely would be heavy on the right! we have a lead vocalist and then 3 backup vocalists, so i tried to pan the 2 bgvs who sing the most opposite and i didn't know where to throw the last one...should i just not pan as hard or what????

We will put some volume automation on that piano and vocal part and we are getting it mastered too, so we will relay that info to them.

I tried adding a little bit of distortion to the bass, still a little more work there yet, it doesn't quite cut through.

the band is the beautiful exit, myspace.com/thebeautifulexit

new music will finally be coming out soon so we are all pretty pumped about that

thanks again for the advice!

lol
i am sure you are a nice guy
and i am sure you know your stuff

but if that's all that the experience has to offer me, then there is not much to listen to

i am really proud of that newer mix, I wsa partly inspired by Casey to record all my stuff (he is pretty anti samples, i doubt act III will have any samples on it).

The only samples are for the keys parts (piano, rhodes, ect)

you guys are such vibe murderers

well, I didn't say there was NOTHING to listen to, i said not much. If you think an opinion on a guitar tone is "much" than good for you. Forums are great, i have learned so much just by reading things and i try to give back as well, i don't understand why you guys act so wierd....

listening back to it about 6 months later, i now have alot of criticisms of the entire mix. I am glad you guys can tag team and accomplish absolutely nothing though.

When i saw the dear hunter i had an amazing conversation with casey about all sorts of different things surrounding recording and he didn't treat me like a two year old or try to keep secrets.

That's ok though, your reactions weren't suprising.

How about we all just take it easy.

Production and engineering is incredibly abstract and while there are people who adhere to a very strict set of rules they learn in books, or school, or forums, or documentaries, or bathroom stalls, or acid trips, or whatever- it is really all opinion and for anyone to sit back and act like there is right or wrong is a waste of time.

It would do everyone a little good to be more nurturing to creativity. If you really know more than someone here, or think you do, there is a way to help and construct statements without trying to come out on top, and prove yourself.

Let's be honest here, this isn't a production forum. The people here who are throwing around their opinions, myself included, have very limited experience doing anything. Professionals- the people who produce and engineer for LIFE spend infinitely less time judging the less experienced. It is best for everyone to take a step back and remember our professional and creative youth. This isn't meant as a dig- but my guess would be that I have a good 10 years of experience on most anyone here. I started at 8 years old splicing tape on an 8 track. I started before digital recording was really going- but who cares? Unless I have something meaningful to say about someone else's work- unless I really can help someone- then why would I open my mouth? It would only serve to expose my inexperience.

I have been busy for a while, and thus, absent- I apologize.

In the words of Jackie Moon- "Everybody love everybody."

I also apologize if I come off as condescending.
