violet is the absolute shit. i think one of the reasons i like it so much is because each of the four songs are pretty different- i feel like it has more variation than most of the other EPs do (except maybe white)
also mr malum and lillian are two of casey's best songs, but i'm pretty sure everyone knows that already

Look Away sounds like it's straight out of a musical. This is not a bad thing. A lot of the others do in some ways (including the Acts) but Look Away is straight up musical exposition.

Yes, I totally agree. This sounds like a song the antagonist would sing while trying to seduce/lure the innocent/naive main character into selling their soul away or something. I love Look Away. I mean, I love all the songs, but if they were my children, this might be the one I'd secretly like the most.

I think he produced violet for Forgive Durden's next album and then decided to put it on TCS.

I react strangely to Violet. I both like it and dislike it, love it and hate it, am mesmerized by it and am turned off to it. I can't really explain it but Violet makes me feel very weird and conflicting emotions. It's the only color that really does that to me. It's like I really don't know what to feel when I hear it, so my self just reacts very oddly to it.

I feel this exactly.

Overall though, I always finish the violet EP happy with what I heard.

I'm afraid of listening to violet too much in relation to the other colors and getting sick of it... That's how much I love violet. I especially love the waltz feel in Lillian.

let's not talk about razia's shadow

and instead talk about how boss the violet EP is

also is it just or did casey really bust out the big guns for the choruses on violet? mr malum, lillian and too late all have extremely awesome and kind of unusual vocal lines. it reminds me of what made me love TDH in the first place

Look Away is definitely my favorite song on Violet. The end of the chorus (DON'T....STOP!) and then that little riff thingy make me jizz in my pants.

I actually am not as fond of Mr. Malum as I am the other tracks. I would say the EP gets progressively better with Look Away being the best... I have easily listened to Look Away more than other tracks in the Color Spectrum, although sometimes if I'm feeling frisky I will listen to Too Late as well before hand, for foreplay.

I progress through these EPs exceptionally slowly, but I definitely feel like Violet is the strongest (albeit not the most ambitious) EP out of the bunch. It sits very comfortably in a very cool style that TDH seem to be easily accustomed to.

Ya i think it would be agreed upon that violet is most like the acts. Which is why i think of the bat it stuck out and became my favorite, cuz its close to what we know and love about TDH

i agree. look away is bar far one of my faves, even on the whole series. it has those sin city type horns, it makes me feel like i'm in a movie driving an old buick.

I love Violet so freaking much it makes me nauseous. The pianos and strings are amazing and the "gasp" bit on Mr Malum is, I think, the highlight of the entire collection. Not sure why I react so strongly to it, but it's so dramatic and  It's everything I love about this band.

violet does definitely scan as the most like the acts, but i still think there's a good deal of stuff on it TDH hasn't really done before
i remember at one show i went to casey said he wanted to explore making his music simpler, and that informed a lot of the branches ep. i feel like violet is a more condensed version of the sound on the acts, not as huge or ambitious but with the same sense of theatricality
which isn't as easy to do as it sounds

My personal favorite from Violet is Too Late. It reminds me so much of the emotional tension present in Red Hands. The chorus is freaking haunting.

An odd yet understandable way of describing Violet is simply this:

If the Acts had a lovechild with a non-concept EP/album, Violet would be the result of that.

I need to finish this thing that I started a while ago. Not today, though.

Basically, you know how I said Violet feels like a musical? I gave it a plot and made it one. There are still a few parts I'm not happy with, though.

I hope to set an example. You know, for children and stuff.

Wow, really? that would be a kick ass musical. Especially considering the story in each song, each one sounds like a tragedy. it fits violet perfectly too.

Edit: Now i have to listen to Violet.

Delayed reply, but I heard it too- very much in the style of Klezmer music, both in instrumentation and feel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klezmer

After giving all 9 EPs time to digest and sit, it's hard to say anything bad about them. Truly the entire Spectrum is brilliant, and I try to say that as objectively as possible. However, I feel comfortable saying Violet has emerged as my favorite. B)
